Curriculum at Brightwalton School

Our intention for every child in this school, is that they experience a rich, ambitious curriculum, which stimulates their curiosity, challenges their perceptions of the world and equips them to be happy, healthy humans. We plan for them to have a clear understanding and appreciation of their lives in our beautiful locality as well as a global context, while developing an awareness of and respect for the diversity of cultures and lifestyles found further afield in the UK and wider world.

Opportunities for problem solving will grow their creative thinking and build resilience, as they learn from mistakes on their journey to success. When they take their next steps, they will know how to keep themselves safe and choose to be respectful, kind, responsible young people who contribute positively to our world.

To achieve this, we are working to develop a curriculum which provides a balance of the subjects offered, allowing sufficient time for the knowledge, skills and understanding of each one to be acquired. Teachers use a broad range of contexts for this learning, drawing on their own and the children's passions and interests. For example, the use of our village church as local historical place study, a trip to Westmill wind turbines and solar farms as part of a learning on the theme of Power or the training programme for Young Leaders, resulting in Year 5 and 6 pupils leading organised activities for younger pupils. We also believe that depth of learning is key, to enable children to retain learning and allow them to practise skills across a range of contexts. Long term planning for all subjects, in two year blocks to allow for our mixed-age classes, along with skills progressions for all subjects ensures that important skills, such as Scientific observation or Geography fieldwork skills are revisited regularly.

Teachers work in three teams to drive curriculum development - English, led by Mrs Kelly, Maths led by Mr Helsby and Curriculum, led by Mrs Clarke.
